Strawberries have shallow roots like irises so you don’t bury them very deep. The crown will rot if it doesn’t get air circulation. Spread the roots out all around the plant and lightly bury with soil and pat down. Don’t bury any leaves, just the roots. Only water when the soil is dry when you stick your finger slightly into the soil. Strawberries will rot if overwatered and dry out quickly if underwatered so just check before watering. If the area’s not irrigated with a sprinkler system and these are planted in full sun in Southern Cali, you may need to water every day when it doesn’t rain.

Also keep in mind there are June-bearing strawberries and everbearing so depending on the type you bought will determine when and how much fruit is produced. Hope that helps.
